Most importantly, you have to have possess and exhibit passion. Since I go to a smaller university with more...conservative individuals, I have a tendency to experience the whole "big fish, little pond" phenomena. Staying connected with LA by my internship and these events, I'm constantly reminded that I'm not the only one trying to make it in the fashion industry (no matter how specified a career I may have). I'll be honest, the first LA event I attended, I was intimidated beyond belief because comparing myself to the idea of these people surrounding me, I thought I was in no way comparable. But as similar as our career aspirations may be, we all have our unique skill sets and it only made me more competitive. I know my ability and I know I can "make" it. I'm very stubborn (in other words, I don't like hearing "no") - so when I want something that seems out of my reach, I pull out my portable step stool and go get it.
Constantly, I'm being asked why I overwork myself and why I insist on piling commitments (full-load of classes to graduate early, part-time job, internships, and making the little time I have left for friends and family). So many times I've been told to slow down or that I should be enjoying college. But honestly, my mind isn't on late night partying and dorm-room bonding - it's on my career and getting to New York.
If you have the ability to possess passion and drive, you only need one more thing: opportunity.
